Batman the TV series debuts on ABC

Today this happened in the past

January 12, 1966—Batman the TV series debuts on ABC

I would be impossible to describe this cultural TV show to anyone who didn’t live in the culture of 1966. From the pop art of the sixties to the corny commentary Batman influenced all of us who lived it.

One of the brilliant ideas the creators came up with was breaking the one hour show in half. The first show aired on Wednesday night and the final half-hour episode on Thursday. The phrase...

“Tune in tomorrow – same Bat-Time, same Bat-channel!”

...became horrifying words to hear as the first half-hour segment seemed to pass quickly with the caped crusaders dangling in some perilous situation, like being tied up on a conveyor belt that was moving into a huge flaming furnace. Now we had to go back to school and wait another whole day for the conclusion, desperately wanting to know what new tool Batman would use to free him or boy wonder.

Then there were the cartoon balloons or onomatopoeia's, giving us a visual sound. No other TV show did this.

I always liked "Klonck"

 Then there were the villains.

Adam West has admitted that Julie Newmar as Catwoman caused "strange stirrings in my utility belt."

And then the car, a big star of the show
